Flower PotInspiration & Tips

The best kind of welcome isn’t at the front door, it’s found in the spaces where life unfolds. It’s on the front porch, yes—but also out back, where the day unwinds a little slower. It’s by the pool, where bare feet and damp towels mark the rhythm of summer. It’s in that quiet moment when you come home from work, reach for the hose, and tend to something that’s been waiting on you all day. Plants have a way of softening a space, of making it feel finished without ever feeling formal. They greet your guests before you do—and more importantly, they greet you.
The truth is, it doesn’t take perfection. It takes a little intention, a good plan, and a willingness to check in daily. Whether you’re styling a welcoming front porch, creating a tucked-away back patio, or adding life to a sun-soaked pool deck, the right planter can shift the entire feel of a space. It’s less about getting it just right—and more about creating something that feels like you.

Before You Plant:
A Few Tried-and-True Tips
Think of your planter as both a container and a commitment. A few small decisions on the front end make all the difference:
- Start with the space. A planter might be stunning, but if it’s too large, too small, or out of scale with your porch, it won’t feel quite right. Let the space guide you.
- Feed your soil well. Mix in a slow-release fertilizer like Osmocote and water-retaining crystals to give your plants a strong, steady start.
- Drainage is everything. Always use pots with drainage holes and fill them with high-quality potting soil, never heavy garden soil.
- Know your container. The smaller the pot, the faster it dries out—especially in our coastal heat.
- Follow the sun. Morning light is gentle; afternoon sun is strong. Be mindful of what each plant prefers and place accordingly.
- Design with intention. Combine different shapes, heights, and textures for interest and balance.
- Remember this formula: thriller, filler, spiller! A technique to create balanced planters—combine a tall dramatic thriller (center/back), a mounded filler (around the center), and a trailing spiller (edge) to create full cascading arrangement that thrives in pots.
- Water daily in the heat. Especially here, where summer shows no mercy. Water deeply, until it runs out of the bottom.
The Tall Planter
Shade-Loving Elegance
Soft, layered, and a little unexpected, this planter leans into texture and movement in a shaded setting.
The Plants
- Monstera
- Hydrangea ‘Matilda Blue’
- Variegated English Ivy
- Kalanchoe
Here, the monstera plays the thriller, bold and architectural. Hydrangea brings that unmistakable Southern softness, while ivy and kalanchoe weave in texture and a gentle spill. Keep this one out of harsh sun, and let it rest where shade lingers a little longer.
The Teal Planter
Full Sun, Full Personality
This one doesn’t hold back—it’s vibrant, layered, and made for long, sunny days.
The Plants
- Cordyline ‘Charlie Boy’
- Hibiscus
- Dipladenia
- Lavender
- Evolvulus ‘Blue My Mind’
- Nemesia ‘Nesia Denim’
- Alyssum ‘Golden Spring’
The cordyline rises as your thriller, with hibiscus adding bold, tropical blooms. Around them, a mix of lavender, nemesia, and alyssum soften and fill, while dipladenia and evolvulus begin to trail and spill over the edges. It’s color, texture, and movement, all working together in the sun.
The Blue Planter
Sun-Drenched and Cascading
A cooler palette with plenty of movement, this planter feels like a breath of fresh air.
The Plants
- Plectranthus ‘Mona Lavender’
- Lantana ‘Little Lucky White’
- Creeping Phlox ‘Eye Candy’
- Penta ‘Graffiti Violet’
- Dipladenia
- Creeping Jenny
- Dorotheanthus ‘Trailing Mezoo’
Here, plectranthus anchors the arrangement, with lantana and penta bringing steady blooms. The magic happens at the edges—creeping jenny and trailing mezoo spill freely, softening the container and drawing the eye downward.
